What am I giving away?

beneath_the_wheelI need to make room on my shelves so I am giving away a used copy of  Hermann Hesse’s Beneath the Wheel. This is the blurb:

Hans Giebenrath lives among the dull and respectable townsfolk of a sleepy Black Forest village. When he is discovered to be an exceptionally gifted student, the entire community presses him onto a path of serious scholarship. Hans dutifully follows the regimen of study and endless examinations, his success rewarded only with more crushing assignments. When Hans befriends a rebellious young poet, he begins to imagine other possibilities outside the narrowly circumscribed world of the academy. Finally sent home after a nervous breakdown, Hans is revived by nature and romance, and vows never to return to the gray conformity of the academic system.

Above is a picture of the actual book you will be getting. It is in good condition, but it IS a used book, so please don’t expect it to be pristine!

Hi, thanks for holding a giveaway. This book looks interesting – I haven’t seen it before (nor heard of the author) and the colour of the cover is just gorgeous. After watching Harry Potter #1 last night, I think it could help fill the HP-void in my life!

Thank you for the giveaway and for opening it to worldwide entries.

I last read Hesse very many years ago and can only vaguely recall his writing but I would like to re-accquaint myself with his work.

  3. I’ve read Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. Loved it. Very interesting telling of the Buddha story. Thanks for the giveaway! This book sounds good.

  4. I’ve read Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha more than once, the first time when I was in college. It’s a book that gives insight into Buddhist. I’m interested in reading Beneath the Wheel because I already like the man’s writings and have never even heard of this one. It sounds like he may have had a problem with “the gray conformity of the academic system.”

Good morning! I’ve never read Hesse before – I have Siddhartha sitting on my shelves somewhere though – but have heard some of my bookshop customers raving about his writing and how much his books have changed them. If it’s good enough for them… ! I was also at school with a boy who was pressed into scholarship, given more and more academic work to do, accepted it all without question – then had a nervous breakdown and never returned to education. Sound familiar?!

Thanks for the giveaway anyway, and have a great weekend!

  7. Thanks for the giveaway, Rikki.

I’ve read Hesse a very, very long time ago: Der Steppenwolf (possibly even in German) and Siddharta. I don’t remember a great deal about them but I’ve felt a bit intimidated by de Big German Writer so I haven’t tried anything else. I’m still intimidated but this story sounds good and I’d love to try it.

  10. Both my husband and I were in the same class in high school (and only one class, to the best of our knowledge). In that class, Western Thought (a philosophy class), we read Magister Ludi by Hesse. We still love all things Hesse-ish. I’ve not read this one.

  11. Laura says:

Hesse is one of those authors who I’ve heard of and yet know pretty much nothing about! All I know is that a lot of his books are on the 1001 books to read before you die list, and I’m pretty sure that means he’s good, right?!

I’ve read Siddharta by Hesse, in a Dutch translation. It’s one of the most beautifully written books I’ve read last year and that is why I am recommending it (to anyone remotely interested in Buddhism, but also in good prose) and looking forward to reading more books by Herman Hesse :-)

  37. I actually haven’t had the pleasure of reading any books by Hesse, so this would be a first for me. Why would I like to read “Beneath the Wheel?” Mmm…I have great respect for gifted people. Who doesn’t? I’m curious to see the protagonist’s relationship with a poet and his evolution. How is he “revived by nature and romance?” This is what I’d like to know.

Thanks for a chance at winning your giveaway.
