The Guardian is going on a new World literature tour and the first stop will be Germany, “land of skill and steel, of tradition and technology”.
Everybody can submit their favourite reads by German authors or about Germany, “which shed some light on the country of Sturm und Drang”.

Fun idea. Unfortunately, I can’t think of any German authors, except Thomas Mann, because you read a book by him recently, and Goethe, whom I would not want to nominate. There are many more, and I must have read some of them.
Peter Handke comes to mind too. But otherwise? I think I lived in England for too long, forgot my German, the language and the authors.
What did you submit?
I haven’t submitted anything yet, but was considering “Das Parfüm”. An awesome book. Probably most people who have seen the (mediocre) film don’t even know that the novel it is based on is by a German.
I did know that actually, but had sort of forgotten. I thought the movie was not very good, loved the book.
