What am I giving away?

I am giving away a used copy of David Guterson’s Snow Falling on Cedars. Never heard of it? This is the blurb:

On San Piedro, an island of rugged, spectacular beauty in Puget Sound, a Japanese-American fisherman stands trial for murder. Set in 1954 in the shadow of World War II, Snow Falling on Cedars is a beautifully crafted courtroom drama, love story, and war novel, illuminating the psychology of a community, the ambiguities of justice, the racism that persists even between neighbors, and the necessity of individual moral action despite the indifference of nature and circumstance.

Above is a picture of the actual book you will be getting. It is in good condition, but it IS a used book, so please don’t expect it to be pristine!

  1. Unfortunately, I have broken my leg so for the majority of the summer I will be laid up catching up on reading. =)

  2. Well, my summer holidays are a long way away as I’m in Australia and freezing! I hope to go to southeast Asia on my next holidays and visit Legoland in Malaysia 🙂

  3. My mum read this book last year and loved it – thanks for the chance to find out why!

My summer holidays… Actually, I pretty much hate the summer holidays these days! Mum and I run a second-hand bookshop in a tourist town, so for us summer means working flat out, running round after other people’s children, and watching holidaymakers having a lovely time while we sit in the shop! *sighs deeply* Oh well. Hopefully I’ll also get in a bit of reading (good coping mechanism!), a few days of lying out in the sun (*stares out at pouring rain*), a read-a-thon or two, plus I have 2-3 days off together in August which means PYJAMA DAYS! 😀

    • Working in a used book store sounds so nice to most of us. You make it sound like a terrible thing, too funny! But I can see why, I could do without running after other people’s children, too.

  4. SEVERN SONG – Philip Gross

    (for John Karl Gross)

The Severn was brown and the Severn was blue –
    not this-then-that, not either-or,
no mixture. Two things can be true.
The hills were clouds and the mist was a shore.

The Severn was water, the water was mud
whose eddies stood and did not fill,
the kind of water that’s thicker than blood.
The river was flowing, the flowing was still,

the tide-rip the sound of dry fluttering wings
with waves that did not break or fall.
We were two of the world’s small particular things.
We were old, we were young, we were no age at all,

for a moment not doing, nor coming undone –
words gained, words lost, till who’s to say
which was the father, which was the son,
a week, or fifty years, away.

But the water said earth and the water said sky.
We were everyone we’d ever been or would be,
every angle of light that says You, that says I,
and the sea was the river, the river the sea.

That pretty much defines my expected summer here in the Uk

  5. I don’t really have many plans for this summer. Just work as usual and plenty of reading. I live about a 5 minute walk from the beach so I’m lucky! Thanks for the giveaway. 🙂

  6. Summer plans – well, we’ve already been on a vacation to New Mexico. I’m starting a new job on Monday and that may be the extent of my plans. Thanks so much for offering the book. I’ve seen the movie, but I’ve not ever read this one. Set in the glorious Pactific Northwest.
Kay’s last post ..I got the job!!! Plus some book stuff…

  7. I;ve just finished my studies so right now I just wanna rest, read, cook and watch dr House and Desperate Housewives. A few days at the seaside would be great too.

  8. I really, really want to go and see my sister who lives in British Columbia.
A great giveaway, thanks for the chance to win.

  9. Thanks for the giveaway! My summer plans are to catch up on my massive TBR pile. Oh, and move. But I’m really just looking forward to the reading part and trying to avoid the moving as much as possible.

  10. My mom just had knee surgery, and I’m taking care of her, so I’ll be spending my summer with her. We are both teachers, my mom and I, so summer is actually the only time we really get to relax, and interact in a meaningful way as a family. Plus, she is the reason I am the voracious reader that I am today, so I’m sure we’ll spend most of the time reading, and then swapping books with each other.

Thank you for your generosity, and for being part of the Literary Giveaway Hop.
