The story guy by Mary Ann Rivers

Cover The story guy by Mary Ann Rivers

Very short synopsis:

Woman answers ad and meets the man of her dreams, just he wants no more than kissing once a week. Why????

This is a lovely novella and a super quick read. I couldn’t put it down as I was too curious to find out what on Earth was going on with Brian. I am a sucker for stories where people meet via ads, email, telephone, anything other than personal encounter, so this was right up my alley.

I did find the explanation in the end a tiny bit far fetched, but this did not lessen my enjoyment of the story. It just flowed.

If you like romance, a man with a secret (nothing bad, I assure you) and a very likeable heroine with no attitude, “The Story Guy” is for you.

Oscar Wilde and the dead man’s smile by Gyles Brandreth

Oscar Wilde And The Dead Man's SmileOscar Wilde And The Dead Man’s Smile by Gyles Brandreth
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another very entertaining book in the series. I loved the theater atmosphere in Paris and Oscar’s excursion to the US.

There are several great scenes which allude to Oscar Wilde’s later life (or death) like his visit to Reading gaol, his statement that he hopes his children will never feel the need to change their family name or the talk about Molière’s grave.

Favourite quote:

“Isn’t Molière buried at Père Lachaise?” I said.

“Oh, now he is, yes, beneath a mighty monument. Now, pilgrims come to kiss his tomb.” My friend chuckled softly and took a sip of wine. “There is no logic to hypocrisy.”

This is a delightful mystery with interesting characters and an intriguing plot.

In my mailbox

This week I was surprised by the speedy delivery of a parcel from Austria. The generous Birgit sent me tons of cozies, together with my prize from one of her Etsy giveaways from her blog The Picture Garden. All I can say is if you want to get spoilt go and befriend Birgit!

I got as gift

  • All the cozies in the picture
  • 3 hairclips
  • a small clutch bag
  • a lovely necklace with a reading chair on the pendant
  • a small mirror for my purse (not shown)
  • and some prints (not shown either)

Thank you so much, Birgit!

The best of Amish friends – Cookbook collection

Cover The best of Amish friends cookbook collection by Wanda E. Brunstetter

In real life this seems to be a spiral bound book, which I quite like. The cover immediately appealed to me and this time I was not disappointed with the photos inside either (see my review of Simply Delicious Amish Cooking). That is until I noticed quite a few pixelated images which still had an iStockphoto watermark on them. I am not sure what is going on but if you buy an image you normally receive the image without a watermark, so I found this quite strange (and they were not pleasing to look at either).

The book is divided into various sections, from breads and rolls, jams and jellies to main dishes, desserts and miscellaneous. Interspersed between the recipes are little stories and tidbits about Amish life and quotes, some are from the Bible, some from other sources, some are trite, some nice. The book makes for an entertaining read even without the recipes.

Most of the main dishes are with meat, but I found lots of nice things among the other chapters. Especially a recipe for zucchini and carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting (see my post about that treat here) has caught my fancy. I will definitely give that one a try.

All in all, a nice cookbook with pretty pictures and some wisdom and information about the Amish thrown in.

Oscar Wilde and the Ring of DeathOscar Wilde and the Ring of Death by Gyles Brandreth
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Good sequel to the candlelight murders. I particularly enjoyed that there are more “celebrities” turning up in this one, for example Bram Stoker and Walter Sickert, who at one point was a suspect for being Jack the Ripper (Particia Cornwell maintains that theory still today).

Again the book is full of quotes and bonmots either by Oscar Wilde or by the author who did a great job “faking” them.

A very enjoyable read.
