The last week was a good one in terms of new books. I received a book I won in the Non-fiction giveaway blog hop and found an interesting book on Netgalley.

Some nice books this week.

I bought (and broke my buying ban)

For review

  • The Chinese orange mystery by Ellery Queen
I remember I read Ellery Queen mysteries already as a child. There were some child editions – I vaguely remember a boy named Milo and a black dog – which were very entertaining . Later on I read a few adult mysteries and really liked them. So when Open Road offered this one for review, I grabbed it.

I was very lucky on Bookmooch the other day and received three books on the same day. Astonishing! The cookbook is from Netgalley and I am very much looking forward to it.

I swapped

  • Caesar’s women by Colleen McCullough, the fourth book in the Masters of Rome series. Another monster of a book with 942 pages – but a tiny paperback.
  • Nights of rain and stars by Maeve Binchy. After making a travel album about a trip to Greece in 1993 I felt like reading something reminding me of it.
  • Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall Smith. The first book in the series of the same name.

My mailbox was super full this week, all thanks to Birgit from The Book Garden who sent me a package with books and other goodies. She sent me a whole stack of cozy mysteries, some of one of our favourite series and some new to me. On top of that she sent me some other things that I won’t show here otherwise you will all come knocking at her door, begging for gifts, Smiley

I got as a gift

They all are going to make for some wonderfully cozy reading under the blanket. Thanks, Birgit, for sending them to me!

A few things today that I am really looking forward to:

I bought

  • Not a book, but I am excited about it. I bought the first season of Downton Abbey after seeing a little of the first episode. Everybody talks about it. I want to know what all the hype is about – late as usual.

This week is exciting because I finally got a book that was recommended to me by a fellow blogger whose taste in mysteries is QUITE different from mine. Plus, I am planning to– hoping for – dreaming about getting back into crochet.

I swapped

Started early, took my dog by Kate Atkinson
Elena will be so pleased (with herself) that I got this. I love the cover and the title, we will see how the rest goes.

Only one non-fiction book this week that I discovered in the Netgalley Christmas newsletter. As I am always on the lookout for new crockpot dishes I had to get this one. It is not exclusively vegetarian, but I am sure I can adapt some recipes. I just saw on Goodreads that the author has written tons of other crockpot cookbooks, one of them a veggie one. Maybe something to think about.

Not very much to report this week. My ban is still working, I haven’t bought a book in ages. This one I only got because someone on my swap site offered one of his in return for one of mine. So I chose this one.

I swapped

I have a couple of books by Jojo Moyes on my TBR list, but so far don’t own any. This one I had never heard of before, but it sounds good. My edition is German (The German title is “Das Haus ohne Wiederkehr” – “The house of no return”) but I decided to post this cover because it is so beautiful.

I got a nice bookish gift in my mailbox this week. Believe it or not, our family joined the group of Kindle users. A friend of mine gave us her spare (first) Kindle as a gift as she received another, more recent, one for Christmas. You might know that I am no Kindle friend, but have to admit that it looks quite good and it has some features that my other reader hasn’t got. Still, I will stick with my trusted old Sony and will only use the Kindle if I have no choice.

As far as books go…

I got for review

  • The Stranger by Kyra Davis, obviously another part of a trilogy with a multi billionaire CEO and erotic tendencies. Reminds you of something? Yes! I couldn’t resist when I saw that one in the Netgalley newsletter. Ally, you should definitely take a look at it!

Birgit from The Book Garden sent me a parcel with tons of lovely goodies, books and souvenirs from her recent trip to the US. I enjoyed every single one of them (and carry around a couple in my purse) – thank you, Birgit!

I will be walking down Memory Lane soon as I have ordered a few books that I loved when I was a little girl. Officially I wanted them so we can read them to our boys at bedtime , but I am sure I will read them myself beforehand.

I bought

Enid Blyton is the creator of many series, but the one I always liked best is the “Five find-outers mystery series”. Five kids, one dog, a small English village, an oaf of a Bobby and cozy mysteries, what else can you ask for? The series was on my auto buy list way before I even knew what auto buy meant and getting a new book (there are 15 total) was always the highlight of the week or month.

I found the first six books in two hardcovers at Awesome Books for about €3 each, a real bargain. They are:

  • The mystery of the burn cottage
  • The mystery of the disappearing cat
  • The mystery of the secret room
  • The mystery of the spiteful letters
  • The mystery of the missing necklace
  • The mystery of the hidden house

I will be having so much fun!

Not much happened this week, but I got a great audiobook in the mail. In fact, I WON this in the Literary Giveaway Blog Hop from Leslie at Under my apple tree. I saw the book at the Goodreads Choice Awards and thought it might be interesting and the next thing you know is that I got an email telling me I won the audiobook! That totally made my day! Thank you, Leslie!
I am rather new to audio books and am eager to find out whether I like this format. A bonus with this one is that it is read by the author himself, how nice is that?

If it hadn’t been for an approval at Netgalley that came as a surprise as I had totally forgotten I had requested this months ago, my mailbox would have been completely empty again.

I am still doing great with my book buying ban. Only one book to talk about.

I swapped

  • Come together by Josie Lloyd & Emlyn Rees (in German). I probably never would have known about this book if it wasn’t for a swap partner who offered one of her books to me. So I chose this one as it sounds quite interesting. A love story (sort of) told from two different points of view.

I didn’t plan on doing a IMM post today, I have been good in not acquiring books, but just today I got an email that my book on hold is now available for download.

  •  Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James
After reading a couple of reviews that were not too bad from my blogging friends I decided I need to know what the hype was about.

Our library (read why it sucks here) will be closing in a week for the big move into the new building. So they are encouraging everybody to check out as many books as they can, in order to facilitate the activities. So I went there on Thursday and got 13 books. To you this might sound like nothing (I have seen library haul in blog posts that was gigantic) but it is quite a lot for me. I got mostly non-fiction (health and cooking) but one.

From the library

  •  Coraline by Neil Gaiman. This is going to be my first encounter with Neil Gaiman. Unfortunately I got it in German, and I am not sure whether the translation will be ok, but we will see. I came across it by accident in the children’s section while browsing for the Dragon Slayers’ Academy.
