Welcome to Blogfest 2011!

Since the last blogfest I have changed the name of my blog and expanded the topics I cover a bit. I still mainly blog about everything bookish, but also about crafts, and various other things that come to my mind.

Have a look around, don’t forget to enter my giveaway and then hop on to the next participating blogs and see what they have to offer.

To see a full list of participants (there are over 200!), please go to A Journey of Books. There you will also find a tracking page where you can track your progress you made during the blogfest.

If you would like to know about my future giveaways and new posts in general please consider subscribing to my RSS feed or follow me on twitter. You can also add me on Google+

Now to the giveaway…

chinese_english

I am giving away a used copy (good condition) of A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo. I blogged about this book in a very, very short post almost three years ago, but you can find a longer review of it at Libri Touches. The giveaway is international.

Product description

Language and love collide in this inventive novel of a young Chinese woman’s journey to the West and her attempts to understand the language, and the man, she adores.Zhuang – or “Z,” to tongue-tied foreigners – has come to London to study English, but finds herself adrift, trapped in a cycle of cultural gaffes and grammatical mishaps. Then she meets an Englishman who changes everything, leading her into a world of self-discovery. She soon realizes that, in the West, “love” does not always mean the same as in China, and that you can learn all the words in the English language and still not understand your lover. And as the novel progresses with steadily improving grammar and vocabulary, Z’s evolving voice makes her quest for comprehension all the more poignant. With sparkling wit, Xiaolu Guo has created an utterly original novel about identity and the cultural divide.

Blogfest – a few int’l giveaways to check out

The blogfest is in full swing and I’m impressed by the traffic that it produced. I was going through a lot of the blogs on the list and found a few really good giveaways that I’d like to share with you. They all are international and do not require following. If I have to follow I immediately move along without entering. I might miss out on some great blogs that way, admittedly, but I just hate the fact I HAVE to follow with GFC, which I never use otherwise, in order to enter).

So here are some giveaways that I entered…Check them out!

Blogfest 2010 – Giveaway 4 – Buffy, the Vampire Slayer

BlogFest 2010

I’m going to host a few giveaways during this blogfest 2010.

The fourth giveaway is for Buffy lovers…two Buffy novels.

buffy

“Ghoul trouble”

Something wicked has been preying on Sunnydale students — and whatever it is, its methods are pretty gruesome. Buffy locates some human bones that have been picked clean, and knows that she’s dealing with an unearthly evil. Some help from the Scooby Gang would be ideal, but they’ve run into trouble of their own. Oz and Xander are literally (perhapsunnaturally) mesmerized by a hottie new chick band headlining at the Bronze, and Willow has been captured by Sunnydale’s latest resident carnivores. What they need is the Slayer. But in order to help her friends, Buffy must first dust a vampire — one that has an urgent interest in Joyce Summers, the unique ability to resist sunlight, and an open invitation to the Summers’ house…

“Power of Persuasion”

When the female population of Sunnydale starts strutting its girl power, the push for gender equality seems like a normal expression of ’90s feminism. After all, a girl trying out for the football team isn’t usually a sign of imminent danger. But when the guys start acting like powerless pawns and a few even turn up dead, Buffy Summers notices that the local womyn’s movement has reached a feverish — and probably unnatural — pitch.

The Slayer is the only one who can see straight during the ultimate battle of the sexes. Her friends — including Giles — are spellbound by the malignant muses permeating the school. Even the local vampires are acting strange. Alone in her search for answers, Buffy must figure out who’s behind the sinister sisterhood…and close the gender gap before the feminist revolution goes too far.

This is a "From my shelf to yours" giveaway. The books are used. So, please don’t expect a pristine condition.

Giveaway rules:

  • The giveaway is open internationally. No country restrictions.
  • It runs until September 12, 2010.
  • Please fill out the form below to enter. No following, subscribing or anything required.
  • The winner will be drawn randomly, announced on my blog and notified by email.

Blogfest 2010 – Giveaway 3 – Thriller

BlogFest 2010

I’m going to host a few giveaways during this blogfest 2010.

The third giveaway are two thrillers by Patricia Cornwell.

cornwell

“Cause of Death”

Patricia Cornwell’s heroine Dr. Kay Scarpetta is back; this time to solve the mystery of the death of an Associated Press reporter who was killed while nosing about in a decommissioned navy yard. Scarpetta’s involvement in the case leads her to be targeted for murder herself by a nasty little neo-fascist cult with delusions of grandeur that include a plan to "kill and maim, frighten, brainwash and torture" all who oppose their plan to rule the world. Helping Scarpetta is her niece Lucy, an F.B.I. agent whose computer expertise leads to a heart-stopping journey into cyberspace.

“All that remains”

In Richmond, Virginia, young lovers are dying. So far, four couples in the area have disappeared, only to be found months later as mutilated corpses. When the daughter of the president’s newest drug czar vanishes along with her boyfriend, Dr. Kay Scarpetta knows time is short. Following a macabre trail of evidence that ties the present homicides to a grisly crime in the past, Kay must draw upon her own personal resources to track down a murderer who is as skilled at eliminating clues as Kay is at finding them….

This is a "From my shelf to yours" giveaway. The books are used. So, please don’t expect a pristine condition.

  • The giveaway is open to Europe.
  • It runs until September 12, 2010.

Weekly Geeks 2010-21: Reassess your blog / Bloggiesta update 2

Two events are happening at the moment: Bloggiesta and Book Blogger Appreciation Week Registration. Both provide an opportunity to reassess your blog and your blogging goals.
If you are participating in either one, great, but even if you are not you can still take part in this week’s Weekly Geeks.
During Bloggiesta participants are asked to take a look at blogging goals. What are your blogging goals? Maybe you did this for the last Bloggiesta, find that post and reevaluate those goals. Have you reached them? Do they no longer apply?

I’m not going to take part in the BBAW, somehow this is all getting too much. September 20-12 will be the Blogfest 2010 I signed up for, so that will be enough to do already.

For Bloggiesta I already did a mini challenge about labels / tags that was hosted on Beth Fish’s blog. Actually that post of Beth’s made me join the Bloggiesta yesterday.

I only recently gave my blog a new look with a new theme, banner and some cleaning up, but I still have some plans what I want to do in the course of the Bloggiesta.

Oh, I need to get going now…

Read what other Weekly Geeks do for the Bloggiesta or BBAW!

Sign up for the Blog Fest here or have a look at the list of participants so far, as well as the tentative list of giveaways.
